The Port of Auckland has introduced the country’s first electric empty container handler aimed at cutting emissions from heavy port machinery.

Co-funded by the Government’s Low Emission Transport Fund (LETF), the large forklift-type machine is now in operation to move and stack empty shipping containers.

“This impressive piece of equipment is fully electric, charged, and ready for action,” the port says.

The LETF is a programme that supports innovative, low-emissions machinery over 3.5 tonnes across New Zealand.

“This milestone marks another step forward in our sustainability journey as we work towards net zero emissions by 2050, zero waste to landfill by 2040, and a healthier harbour for all,” the port adds.

Port of Auckland estimates replacing one diesel handler with an electric model will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 670,977 kilograms of CO2 equivalent over ten years. It currently operates six diesel-powered empty container handlers.

Both Port of Auckland and CentrePort in Wellington were approved in August last year for up to $500,000 each to procure an electric handler and install on-port charging infrastructure.
