Government funds new e-bike charging stations on NZ cycle trails

E-bike tourism in New Zealand is set to benefit from new infrastructure investment, with government funding supporting new charging stations on two iconic cycle trails and more routes now eligible for future support.

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston has confirmed that $478,750 in co-funding has been allocated from the Electrifying the Great Rides Fund to install 10 e-bike charging stations on the Hawke’s Bay Trails and the Remutaka Cycle Trail.

Launched in 2023 with a $3 million budget, the fund aims to make the Ngā Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trailnetwork more accessible for e-bike riders—both local and international.

“Cycle trails are vital to attracting visitors to our regions, supporting local businesses, jobs and communities,” Upston said. “By investing in our Great Rides, we’re also investing in economic growth across the regions.”

The Hawke’s Bay Trails will gain six new charging locations near i-SITE visitor centres and local businesses, while the Remutaka Cycle Trail will receive four units positioned at popular business stops along its route.

The second round of funding opens 1 August 2025, with updated criteria allowing Heartland Rides and Connector Rides—as well as the traditional Great Rides—to apply. This expands eligibility to more remote and rural routes across the country.

“As demand for nature-based and low-emission tourism increases, this investment supports both environmental and regional economic goals,” said Upston.

Community groups, local councils, and territorial authorities are encouraged to apply. Further details will be available from 30 June on the MBIE website.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is also working with sector partners on a broader refresh of the New Zealand Cycle Trail programme to meet evolving tourism trends.
