Smart reveals plug-in hybrid

Smart has unveiled a new plug-in hybrid version of its largest SUV, the #5 EHD, offering a claimed electric range of 250km and a total range of up to 1600km on a full charge and tank.

The new model pairs a 41kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by CATL with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 120kW. It is mated to an electric motor that likely delivers 250kW and 373Nm, based on the same setup in the RWD version of the all-electric #5.

Styling is carried over from its pure-electric sibling, featuring a distinctive boxy profile and roof-mounted lidar system, signalling advanced driver-assistance capabilities.

While the electric-only CLTC range is rated at 250km, the WLTP figure sits slightly lower at a claimed 208km. Fuel consumption is rated at 4.4L/100km combined.

At 4705mm long, 1920mm wide and 1710mm tall, the #5 is the largest vehicle in the Smart line-up. It rides on a 2900mm wheelbase and weighs in at 2190kg—lighter than the BEV variant due to the smaller battery.

Smart describes the #5 EHD as a long-distance companion to the existing fully electric models, which offer up to 740km of range. The new PHEV may appeal to drivers wanting more flexibility and rapid refuelling for extended travel, particularly in markets where charging infrastructure remains inconsistent.

While the fully electric #5 has struggled in its initial launch in China, the addition of the hybrid model could help boost demand. Larger SUVs tend to gain greater traction in hybrid format than as battery-electric only.

The #5 EHD will go on sale in China later this year. Smart already has a presence in New Zealand with its all-electric #1 and #3 models.
