BYD develops smaller lifestyle ute to join Shark range

BYD appears set to expand its ute lineup with a smaller, car-based pickup that will sit below the Shark 6, according to patent images filed with European intellectual property regulators.

The designs, uncovered by Car News China, show a dual-cab ute that shares styling cues with the BYD Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV and adopts monocoque construction rather than the ladder-frame chassis used by the larger Shark 6.

The images reveal a shorter, integrated load tub that suggests this is a “lifestyle” ute aimed at urban and suburban buyers rather than heavy-duty commercial use. The front end carries unique styling but shows some resemblance to the Sealion 5, while the taillights echo the Shark 6’s design language.

DM-i hybrid system expected

The new BYD ute is expected to use the brand’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system, pairing a 1.5-litre petrol engine with one or two electric motors. This would align with BYD’s broader powertrain strategy across its SUV and passenger car range.

Given BYD’s current naming convention, the new model could wear a Shark 3 or Shark 4 badge to complement the larger Shark 6 that launched in New Zealand earlier this year.

Relevance for New Zealand market

Although the patents were registered in Europe, where utes represent a niche segment, the move could signal future availability in right-hand-drive markets including Australia and New Zealand. BYD’s model lineup in these markets closely mirrors its European offerings.

The lifestyle ute segment has grown significantly in New Zealand, with buyers seeking pickup versatility without the size and fuel consumption penalties of traditional work-focused models.

The new BYD pickup is expected to make its debut sometime in 2026, though local availability timing would depend on BYD New Zealand’s product planning and right-hand-drive development schedules.
