GAC launches Aion V electric SUV in New Zealand

Chinese automaker GAC has officially launched in New Zealand with its Aion V electric SUV leading the charge, offering competitive pricing that undercuts established rivals in the mid-size EV segment.

The Aion V arrives with pricing from $49,990 for the Premium model and $51,990 for the Luxury variant. A $2000 launch discount brings the effective starting price to $47,990, positioning it below the BYD Atto 3 Extended Range ($51,990) and significantly under the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (from $59,990).

GAC officially launched at an Auckland event today, marking the entry of Guangzhou Automobile Group Motor Co into the New Zealand market. The company is China’s fifth-largest vehicle manufacturer, producing over two million vehicles annually and operating the dedicated Aion electric vehicle sub-brand.

Technical specifications target daily usability

Both Aion V variants feature a 150kW/210Nm front-mounted electric motor powered by a 75kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by CATL. The setup delivers up to 510km of WLTP range and achieves 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds.

The SUV’s charging capability stands out for daily use, with DC fast-charging speeds up to 180kW enabling 30 to 80 per cent charge in 24 minutes, or 10 to 80 per cent in 22 minutes. The Aion V shares its underpinnings with the Chinese-market Toyota bZ3X.

Standard equipment on the Premium model includes 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with auto high-beam, panoramic sunroof, and hands-free power tailgate. Interior features include a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 8.8-inch digital driver display, wireless phone charging, and 9-speaker audio system.

Both front seats are heated and ventilated, with power adjustment and memory function for the driver’s seat. The vehicle features dual-zone climate control and 60:40 split-folding rear seats.

A unique feature is a 6.6-litre refrigerator built into the centre console that maintains temperatures from -15°C to +50°C, using just 0.5kWh of electricity over 24 hours at 4°C. The unit can hold up to 12 cans and doubles as a warming function.

Broader model range launched

GAC has also launched two additional models: the GS3 Emzoom compact petrol SUV from $31,990 and the M8 plug-in hybrid people mover from $85,990. The M8’s 25.57kWh battery provides up to 106km of electric-only range under WLTC testing, making it New Zealand’s only plug-in hybrid people mover.

The company has established GAC New Zealand with headquarters in Takapuna, Auckland. Authorised dealerships include Tauranga Motor Company, with locations in both Tauranga and Hamilton.

GAC has confirmed plans to expand its local lineup with three additional models in 2026. The company’s arrival adds further depth to the growing contingent of Chinese automakers entering New Zealand’s electric vehicle market, joining BYD, MG, GWM, Omoda, and Chery.
