Kiwi Evans claims record 15th Formula E victory

New Zealand’s Mitch Evans has broken the Formula E wins record with his 15th career victory at the Miami E-Prix, climbing from ninth on the grid to take a commanding win in wet conditions.

The Jaguar TCS Racing driver made history at the Miami International Autodrome on February 1, surpassing all previous drivers to become Formula E’s most successful winner in the championship’s 11-year history. All 15 of Evans’ victories have come with the British-based Jaguar team.

Evans also became only the fourth driver in Formula E history to surpass 1000 championship points during the race, adding the fastest lap to his victory tally in difficult conditions.

The win marks the first victory for new Jaguar TCS Racing Team Principal Ian James since joining the team ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Wet weather plays into Jaguar’s hands

Rain fell throughout the race weekend, with the event starting behind the safety car before a standing start after four laps. Evans and teammate António Félix da Costa both showed strong pace in the challenging conditions, with da Costa qualifying third and Evans starting ninth.

Da Costa moved into the lead on lap 17 after deploying his first Attack Mode, while Evans climbed from seventh to third by lap 21. The Kiwi driver then overtook his teammate before snatching the lead from Porsche’s Nico Müller on lap 27.

Evans managed his second Attack Mode period effectively and held off Müller’s challenge to take the chequered flag, securing his first win of the 2025/26 campaign.

Da Costa’s podium hopes dashed

Jaguar TCS Racing looked set for a double podium finish until da Costa was hit by Andretti’s Felipe Drugovich on lap 26. The Brazilian driver received a 10-second penalty for the contact, but the damage to da Costa’s car was significant enough to drop him back to eighth place despite his efforts to continue.

“It’s such an incredible feeling taking this record-breaking win here in Miami,” Evans said. “To have taken the most number of wins in Formula E is a special feeling and to come from behind to take the win makes it even sweeter.”

Team Principal Ian James praised both drivers’ performances despite the disappointment for da Costa.

“I am absolutely thrilled for everyone in the Jaguar TCS Racing team following a superb victory in Miami,” James said. “In damp and tricky conditions Mitch drove peerlessly to take the win, and claiming the record for the highest number of victories in Formula E history, all with Jaguar, is testament to his skill behind the wheel.”

Da Costa remained philosophical about the incident that cost him a likely podium finish.

“I’m pleased for the team and Mitch as with the win and my eighth place we got good points on the board, which is great reward for everyone’s hard work, but personally I’m disappointed,” da Costa said. “We had great pace in the Jaguar I-TYPE 7 and I was absolutely in the fight for a top-three finish when my race was ruined by someone else’s mistake.”

Championship implications

The victory moves Evans up to sixth in the Drivers’ World Championship standings, while da Costa climbs to 14th after scoring his first points since joining Jaguar TCS Racing. The team now sits seventh in the Teams’ World Championship, with Jaguar moving up to third in the Manufacturers’ standings.

Jaguar TCS Racing will look to build on this momentum at the upcoming Jeddah E-Prix double-header on February 13–14, with Evans confident the team can carry their strong form forward.
