ABB to supply Volvo Cars with 1300 robots for EVs

ABB-Volvo-Cars

ABB will supply more than 1300 robots including functional packages to Volvo Cars for the next generation of electric vehicles (EVs).

The energy efficient large robots and OmniCore controllers will help Volvo Cars deliver energy savings of up to 20% and achieve its sustainability targets, says ABB, adding that deployment starts in 2024 at Volvo Cars’ production sites in Torslanda (Sweden) and Daqing (China).

“The automotive industry’s historic transformation, driven by increasing consumer demand for electric vehicles and a desire to operate more sustainably, is creating new opportunities as well as challenges for global manufacturers,” says ABB Robotics president Marc Segura.

“This latest commitment from our partner Volvo Cars demonstrates our shared focus of delivering more sustainable manufacturing.”

During the deployment, ABB will ensure production remains uninterrupted through its RobotStudio planning and programming software platform to visualise and optimise the deployment before the robots are installed.

It is the latest in a series of solutions by ABB aimed at helping the global automotive industry reach its ambitious sustainability targets and transition to EV production.
