Another big month for Leaf as market hits 300

The market for electric vehicles crossed the 300 unit mark for the first time in June, with the Nissan Leaf making up more than half of the market.

According to the Ministry of Transport, registrations of all plug-in vehicles totalled 302, a new record. This was made up of 109 new vehicles and 194 used imports.

Collectively, the electric vehicle fleet has hit 3834, meaning the government’s target of hitting 3950 before the end of the year should be passed in the middle of August.

In new car market, the Tesla Model X led on 17 registrations. The Tesla Model S was second on 15, just ahead of the Hyundai Ioniq with 13 registrations.
The only other pure electric to land sales for the month was the BMW i3 on two vehicles.

In plug-in hybrid cars, the Mitsubishi Outlander produced its highest result ever with 49 cars.

NZ marketing manager Reece Congdon says the jump in sales included a fleet deal with energy company Mercury.

“We are delighted that Mercury has chosen to advance its leadership in the move towards electric vehicles by embracing the utility of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV,” says Congdon.

The BMW 225xe was the second most popular plug-in on two vehicles.
The king of the electric vehicle fleet remains the Nissan Leaf, which had a huge month on 161 used import registrations.

The Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid was second on four units, followed by the Renault Zoe on three.

The Kia Soul and Nissan E-NV200 were next on two units each.
