Armstrongs confirms BAIC’s Arcfox EV brand for New Zealand
Armstrongs confirms that Arcfox, the premium electric vehicle (EV) brand of Chinese automaker BAIC Group, will launch in New Zealand next month as part of Auto Distribution Holdings’ expanding new vehicle portfolio.
The brand debut follows the recent introduction of parent company BAIC into the New Zealand market and will focus exclusively on battery electric vehicles (BEVs). BAIC was founded in 1958, with Arcfox established in 2017 as its dedicated EV marque.
“Arcfox, as BAIC’s premium, technology-driven EV brand and we know it will have distinctive appeal for our customers, offering stylish exterior designs alongside comfortable and spacious interiors and advanced operating systems that deliver a premium experience in the heart of the electric vehicle market,” says Simon Rutherford, chief executive of Auto Distribution Holdings.
Rutherford says the timing addresses current market conditions affecting New Zealand motorists.
“We are working very closely with Arcfox to expedite launch stock to New Zealand so we can do our part to help Kiwis manage through this unprecedented period of petrol pump pain, whilst reducing the amount of tailpipe emissions from the country’s new vehicle fleet,” he says.
T1 crossover leads local launch

The first model to arrive will be the Arcfox T1, described as a small to mid-size crossover SUV with an urban focus. The vehicle features a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery capable of more than 300km range on the WLTP cycle.
“The Arcfox T1 could be considered as a crossover, sitting in the sweet spot between car and SUV, complemented by a raised ride height,” says Shiguang Guo, general manager for Arcfox New Zealand.
“The package is considered and thoughtful, delivering space and comfort for all occupants.”
The T1 will launch with a limited-time price of $34,990, representing a $2000 discount from the recommended retail price. Guo says dealers can take orders immediately, with strong early interest expected.
“Dealers are able to take orders now, meaning there’s every possibility the first boatload of arrivals into the country will be sold out given the interest in full EV models, so there is urgency to secure your new car today if you want to make the switch to electric,” he says.
The T1 comes equipped with front, side and curtain airbags, plus automatic emergency braking (AEB), front collision warning (FCW), pedestrian collision warning (PCW) and lane departure warning (LDW). The vehicle is backed by a six-year/200,000km warranty. The company says its New Zealand vehicles will feature intelligent driving hardware typically found in high-end EV models but at more accessible price points.
