Audi fast-charging hub concept planned

Audi is working on a concept charging hub for “premium-level electromobility” which it intends revealing in more detail later this year.

The company plans a charging hub with 2.45MWh of energy storage provided by used lithium-ion batteries to address future peak demands and any lack of home charging.

The hub would have six high-power charging (HPC) stations offering up to 300kW charging output, which can be reserved in advance, only needing a standard 400V high-voltage hook-up.

The cube-shaped charging hub is also planned to incorporate an upstairs lounge-style area with refreshments and various amenities available so people can wait in comfort for about 20 minutes or so while their EV recharges.

A pilot phase plans for drivers of other brand EVs to be able to use charging stations that are open and not reserved as well as parts of the lounge.

The flexible container cubes can be moved elsewhere and fulfill various technical requirements, including housing charging pillars as well as the batteries.

Roof-top photovoltaic modules provide additional green energy. This not only makes it easier to select possible locations, it also reduces the planning time required and the costs while saving resources, Audi says.

The aim is to minimise the hub’s reliance on the local energy grid, instead incorporating off-peak energy and then recharging cars during peak hours.

“This makes complex infrastructure with high voltage lines and expensive transformers unnecessary,” Audi explains.

Audi will roll out the hub pilot later this year and is looking for a suitable site in Germany.

The brand plans to ramp up its electrification efforts by 2025 with a wide range of more than 20 fully electric models.
