Australia EV sales reach 16.4% market share in April
Electric vehicles accounted for 16.4% of all new vehicle sales in Australia in April, with EVs making up around one in every six vehicles sold.
A total of 92,591 new vehicles were sold during the month, up 2.2% on April last year, highlighting continued resilience in the market despite global uncertainty and the prospect of further interest rate rises.
Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries chief executive Tony Weber says growing supply and policy support are driving the shift.
“The increase in supply of EVs since the introduction of the New Vehicle Efficiency Scheme, combined with higher petrol prices and the continued support provided through the Federal Government’s Electric Car Discount, is now translating into stronger demand,” Weber says.
He says the Government’s decision to continue the Electric Car Discount will help maintain momentum.
“There are around 110 EV models available to Australians, and the supply of EVs continues to increase. The Electric Car Discount has provided important stimulus to the market, and its continuation will support the growth of EVs.”
Weber says rising EV uptake is also placing pressure on charging infrastructure.
“Stronger EV uptake is driving increased demand for public charging, and that demand must be matched by a step change in both public and private investment to ensure infrastructure keeps pace.”
Chinese brands gain share
BYD was the second best-selling brand in April, capturing 8.3% of the market, reflecting the growing presence of Chinese manufacturers, which accounted for around 30% of total sales.
Toyota remained the market leader with 15,185 vehicles sold, followed by BYD (7,702), Kia (6,450), Hyundai (6,002), Ford (5,748), Mazda (5,636), GWM (4,717), Chery (4,322), MG (3,678) and Isuzu Ute (3,447).
Top-selling models
The Toyota RAV4 was the top-selling model for the month with 3,729 units, followed by the Ford Ranger (3,661) and Toyota Hilux (2,835).
Other top performers included the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (2,379), Hyundai Kona (2,158), Toyota Prado (1,870), BYD Sealion 7 (1,780), Haval Jolion (1,754), Ford Everest (1,585) and Mitsubishi Outlander (1,540).
The latest figures reflect a market continuing to evolve, with electrification gaining pace alongside strong competition from new and emerging brands.
