BMW M will launch its first fully electric high-performance models from 2027, marking a significant shift for the German brand’s motorsport division.

The electric BMW M models will be based on the company’s Neue Klasse platform and feature a four-motor BMW M eDrive system, with each wheel driven by an individual electric motor.

“The next generation of models are set to establish a new benchmark in the high-performance vehicle segment,” says Franciscus van Meel, Managing Director of BMW M GmbH. “With the latest generation of Neue Klasse technology, we are taking the BMW M driving experience to a new level and will inspire our customers with outstanding, racetrack-ready driving dynamics for everyday use.”

The new architecture will feature BMW M Dynamic Performance Control, which BMW says unlocks new potential in driving dynamics and safety. The system enables maximum energy recuperation and optimum traction up to the limit, while also allowing the front axle to be completely decoupled for rear-wheel drive characteristics.

Each of the four electric motors drives one wheel through individual gearboxes. The drive units integrate the inverter for controlling the motors and oil supply, enabling precise torque and power control at each wheel.

The high-voltage battery will offer more than 100kWh of usable energy and feature 800-volt technology for faster charging. BMW says the battery has been specifically adapted for high-performance use with both road and racetrack capability through a “Design to Power” approach using performance-optimised Gen6 cylindrical cells.

The battery housing serves as a structural component connected to the front and rear axles, increasing overall vehicle stiffness and improving driving dynamics.

Natural fibre materials debut

BMW M will introduce natural fibre elements for the first time in its electric high-performance models. The brand has used natural fibre in motorsport since 2019, with the material offering similar properties to carbon fibre but producing around 40% less CO2 during manufacturing.

The electric M models will feature four high-performance computers called “Superbrains” that control driving dynamics, automated driving, infotainment and comfort functions. BMW says this architecture enables faster data exchange and quicker updates.

The announcement comes from BMW Group Australia and New Zealand, suggesting the electric M models will be available in both markets when production begins in 2027.

BMW M’s electric transition maintains the brand’s motto of “Born on the racetrack. Made for the streets. Core of a passionate community” while delivering what the company calls an unprecedented combination of driving pleasure and racetrack capability in electric form.
