BMW ‘Neue Klasse’ iX3 EV at September show
Series production of BMW’s Neue Klasse starts in late 2025 with the BMW iX3 due to roll off the production line at a new plant in Debrecen, Hungary.
A production-ready BMW iX3 Neue Klasse sports activity vehicle (SAV) battery electric vehicle (BEV) is expected to be revealed at the IAA Mobility event in Munich, the show running September 9-12, 2025.
The new BMW iX3 will lead a model ramp-up of more than 40 models through to 2027, including a sporty sedan core to the BMW brand and released in 2026.
So says BMW AG management board chair Oliver Zipse.
New technology, consistent electrification of the model range and the upcoming launch of the Neue Klasse were key themes at the BMW Group’s annual conference in Munich on March 14, 2025.
New technology clusters will be rolled out too, starting from the BMW 1X3’s series launch.
In developing these clusters, the BMW Group successfully registering numerous patents for electric motor components, display projection technologies and driving dynamics control functions, among other things, the group says.
“In the future, every BMW model will benefit, not just from the new model generation’s technological advances but from the new design language as well.”
A digital “nervous system” will be provided for new software-defined vehicles.
“The result is a fully restructured digital nervous system with new on-board network and software architectures and four ‘superbrains’. These high-performance computers deliver the computing power for the infotainment, automated driving, driving dynamics and basic functions,” the BMW Group says, adding it is centralising and significantly reducing the number of electronic control units in the vehicle while providing well over 20 times more in-car computing power and a more efficient on-board network.”
About 600 metres less cable means weight is down by 30%, says the group.
“A flexible electricity supply is now possible too, thanks to digital fuses – or smart eFuses – which allow unnecessary load consumers to be deactivated, for instance during parking or charging.”
Over-the-air (OTA) upgrades keep vehicles digitally up to date, says BMW Group which expects to have 10 million vehicles capable of OTA updates out on the roads this year.
“With the Neue Klasse, we are implementing the biggest future-focused project in the history of our company, while at the same time achieving a robust free cash flow,” says Zipse.
Investment reached its highest level in 2024, says management board member, finance, Walter Mertl.
With efficient internal combustion engines (ICE), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), BEVs and soon hydrogen fuel-cell electric drivetrains, BMW Group says it is well positioned to meet worldwide customers’ diverse needs.
BEVs remain the group’s main growth driver.
“Our broad all-electric range comprises more than 15 models across all brands and is one of the most extensive in the competition,” says the group.
“In 2024, BMW Group BEV sales worldwide rose to 426,536 units, accounting for more than 17% of sales. At Mini, one in four vehicles is fully electric, at Rolls-Royce, it’s already one in three.”
State-of-the-art PHEVs by BMW offer more than 100km electric range, contributing substantially to carbon dioxide reduction, says the group.
“In 2024 the BMW Group delivered nearly 600,000 electrified vehicles (PHEVs and BEVs) in total to customers, meaning almost one in four of its vehicles sold was electrified.
The company says it will reach two major milestones in 2025 – three million electrified vehicles on the roads since the launch of the BMW i3 and BMW i8 and,1.5 million fully-electric vehicles delivered to customers.
The new BMW iX3 will feature a completely new display and highly intelligent operating system, says the group, while the Neue Klasse also sees the BMW Group launch its sixth-generation eDrive technology.
The BMW Group says it will use round cells for the high-voltage battery and an 800Volt system in the future, enhancing energy density by 20%, charging times by 30% and range by more than 30%.
