BMW shows Vision CE electric bike with no-helmet freedom

BMW Motorrad has unveiled its Vision CE electric bike at the Munich motor show, reviving the idea of helmet-free urban riding.

The firm says the new concept offers “an increased sense of freedom and a casual, carefree riding experience” – positioning it as a fresh take on city commuting.

BMW already sells the CE 04, a radical electric scooter that sits somewhere between a motorcycle and scooter. It can sprint to 50km/h in just 2 seconds, outpacing most cars with ease.

That was followed in 2024 by the smaller, more affordable CE 02, also fully electric.

The Vision CE, however, draws on the spirit of the BMW C1 scooter from 2000. That machine featured a body shell that allowed riders to go without helmets or protective clothing. The Vision CE updates the concept with a metal cage enclosure and a safety belt, providing protection while dispensing with the roof. BMW says the extra safety means riders don’t need traditional gear – though a rain jacket might be sensible.

The bike’s reduced cage height, open design and long wheelbase give it a stretched, lightweight look. Aluminium elements are finished in white and black, with neon red graphics adding a sharp contrast. A matte seat bench completes the futuristic styling.

The Vision CE also comes with a party trick – it can balance itself when stationary.

Power comes from the CE 04’s motor, delivering 31kW and 62Nm, paired with an 8.5kWh battery for a range of up to 130km. Top speed is easily 100km/h, though range will drop on motorway runs.

Whether it makes production will depend on public reaction at the show, BMW says.
