BYD opens world-record all-terrain circuit in China
BYD has opened a new All-Terrain Circuit in Zhengzhou, China, specifically designed for New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) and featuring two certified Guinness World Records.
The facility includes an indoor sand dune with a 26.9 metre vertical drop and 28-degree slope that has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the highest and largest dune climbing facility for car testing. Built using 6200 tons of sand to replicate the Alxa Desert, the circuit represents what BYD calls its “Technology for All” philosophy.
The Zhengzhou circuit breaks away from traditional single-track designs by offering eight distinct experience zones in one location. These include an Indoor Sand Dune, Low-Friction Ring, Kick-Plate, Wading Pool, Dynamic Paddock, full Racetrack, Off-Road Park, and Camping Area.
Water crossing and extreme testing capabilities
A 70-metre water-crossing pool has been built exclusively for the YANGWANG U8 SUV, allowing the vehicle to demonstrate its ability to move forward, turn, and reverse underwater. The capability is enabled by BYD’s e4 platform technology.
The circuit also serves as a hub for NEV safety innovation. The Kick-Plate feature uses a wet, polished cement surface to simulate icy road conditions, while movable suction plates allow drivers to safely experience sudden loss-of-control scenarios.
The Low Friction Circle spans 44 metres in diameter and consists of 30,000 smooth basalt bricks covered with 3mm of water to maintain a constant friction coefficient similar to ice and snow conditions. BYD says this zone allows users to achieve stable drifting using the company’s millisecond-level electronic control response and intelligent body control system.
Comprehensive testing environment
The 1.758km racetrack features nine curves and a 550-metre straight acceleration section for testing vehicle performance in both high-speed scenarios and precision steering situations.
The 15,300 square-metre Dynamic Paddock includes more than a dozen scenarios such as standard slalom courses, moose testing, and automated parking demonstrations to showcase BYD’s intelligent technology capabilities.
A total of 27 off-road scenarios span from beginner to advanced levels, designed to make off-road driving accessible to a wider range of users. BYD says its intelligent all-wheel drive systems enable even urban SUVs to navigate beginner-level terrain.
The facility serves as a testing and development centre for NEVs, with applications for racing, professional driver training, and track experiences.
BYD plans to open two additional circuits in China in the near future, expanding its testing and experience capabilities for electric and hybrid vehicles.
The development comes as BYD continues to expand its global presence, including in New Zealand where the Chinese automaker offers models including the Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, and Shark through local distributor Ateco Automotive.
