BYD’s record 2,750-car shipment quietly confirms a new model for NZ
BYD's largest NZ shipment yet lands at the end of August: 2,750 vehicles across two vessels, quietly confirming the plug-in hybrid Atto 2 DM-i for New Zealand and clearing an April-dated order backlog.
BYD will land 2,750 vehicles in New Zealand at the end of August, its largest shipment since the brand arrived here, and the cargo list names a model never announced for this market.
Two vessels arrive at the end of August: the Morning Cara carrying 2,395 vehicles into Auckland, and the Morning Celesta with a further 355. Between them they cover most of the BYD range, including the freshly priced Atto 3 Evo and the Shark 6 Performance ute.
The third model named is the one without a local launch behind it: the “never-before-seen Atto 2 DM-i”, the plug-in hybrid version of the compact Atto 2, confirmed for New Zealand via a shipping release rather than an announcement. A super hybrid Atto 2 would extend BYD’s DM-i line-up below the Sealion 6 and Shark 6 and give the brand a plug-in option in the compact SUV class. We have asked BYD NZ for details.
The release also puts a date on the supply squeeze: BYD says strong demand combined with shipping constraints out of China created a backlog of orders dating back to April, which these two vessels clear while restocking dealers.
“This significant increase in supply will help us meet our increasing customer demand more efficiently, reduce delivery lead times, and ensure more New Zealanders can experience BYD’s innovative and sustainable mobility solutions,” says BYD Auckland general manager Jenni Martin.
Coastal shipping for the South Island
BYD NZ has also arranged coastal shipping to move vehicles directly from the Port of Auckland to Lyttelton, sending South Island cars by sea rather than truck. The company says it will significantly cut delivery times for South Island customers while easing pressure on national freight networks.
“This is a landmark moment for BYD in New Zealand,” says BYD Auto NZ general manager Warren Willmot. “Bringing in our largest-ever shipment of NEVs shows just how far we’ve come, and how strong demand has been from Kiwi drivers who want an affordable, reliable path into electric and hybrid vehicle ownership.”
The timing sets dealers up for the summer selling season with on-ground stock, arriving as BYD’s first price rises in three years work through the range and a sub-$45,000 EV market that gained two more entrants this week alone.
