BYD’s first owned vessel arrives in Melbourne

BYD’s first company-owned car-carrying vessel has completed its maiden voyage to Australia, arriving in Melbourne with 4809 new energy vehicles aboard.

The BYD ZHENGZHOU unloaded 1855 vehicles at the Port of Melbourne on 2 June, with the remaining cargo destined for Sydney (1519 vehicles) and Brisbane (1435 vehicles).

Around 200 VIPs, industry leaders, BYD and DENZA dealers and staff attended a celebration event at the port to mark what the company describes as a significant milestone for its Australian operations.

The arrival represents more than a logistical achievement, with approximately three-quarters of the vehicles aboard already sold to fill customer orders. BYD says demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) spiked in March and April as fuel prices increased and cost-of-living pressures affected Australian consumers.

Supply chain commitment

The vessel’s arrival supports BYD’s commitment to deliver 30,000 vehicles to Australian customers across April, May and June. The company says it will continue sending owned roll-on roll-off vessels to Australia as required to meet customer demand.

The BYD ZHENGZHOU carries both BYD and DENZA branded vehicles, with DENZA representing BYD’s premium new energy vehicle division.

DENZA launched its first Australian models – the B5 and B8 luxury off-roaders – in early 2026, adding the D9 luxury people mover in March. The brand has since confirmed the Z9GT for the Australian market, with deliveries scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2026.

The Z9GT will be the first model sold in Australia featuring BYD’s next-generation Blade Battery 2.0 technology and FLASH ultra-fast charging capability.

The arrival of company-owned vessels marks BYD’s move toward greater supply chain control as it expands its Australian market presence.
