Chademo releases 200kW charger, aiming to double that

The Chademo Association had another year of growth for its chargers in 2017, cementing its market leading position and also announcing plans to release a 400kW version early this year.

The number of DC fast chargers with Chademo plugs increased worldwide by 30% year-over-year to 17,700, Inside EVs reports.

In Europe, the growth was 50% to 6060.

Since 2010, around 775,000 plug-in cars with Chademo inlets were sold (including 330,000 in Europe).

In parallel with chargers, EV sales boomed last year, thanks to growing public awareness and increased market offers from carmakers.

Last year, 10 new countries installed their first Chademo charger, including India, Jordan, the Philippines, Serbia, and Uganda.

The Chademo Association says it is working on increasing power, with the Chademo 1.2 version enabling charging at up to 200kW.

The next step is the Chademo 2.0 version due to be released in early 2018, increasing the voltage to 1000V, or up to 400kW of power.

“Our plug being identical in any geographical region, with the emergence of second-hand EV market developing in different parts of the world on top of the new Chademo EVs coming to the market, we expect the demand for Chademo to stay strong,” Chademo Association secretary-general Makoto Yoshida says.

“In view of the warning from IEC/ISO, we have reviewed the safety measures of Chademo and feel confident that our technology provides safety, interoperability and is future-proof.”
