ChargeNet has resolved charging infrastructure problems at three South Island locations, with new chargers being installed at Fairlie and Geraldine and a replacement unit organised for Lake Tekapo.

The charging network operator says work began on February 17 to install new 50kW chargers at both Fairlie and Geraldine sites, following negotiations with Alpine Energy to allow the installations.

Both locations were expected to be back online on February 18, ChargeNet said.

“Thank you for your patience and continued feedback. We’re looking forward to having these back up and running for you,” ChargeNet said in a social media update on February 17.

The Lake Tekapo charger outage was caused by third-party damage, with Alpine Energy organising a replacement unit to restore service from February 23.

“We know how important this charger is for locals and travellers along the route. Thanks for your patience while it’s being fixed,” the company said.

The restorations follow reliability issues at Alpine Energy-operated charging sites that prompted an apology from the South Island electricity distributor earlier this year.

ChargeNet acknowledged customer feedback in identifying the problems and working toward solutions at the three locations, which serve key travel routes in the South Island.

The Fairlie and Geraldine sites provide charging options for travellers between Christchurch and the West Coast, while Lake Tekapo serves the popular tourist route to the Mackenzie District.
