Electric Hilux and new Subaru EVs earn five-star ANCAP ratings

The battery-electric Toyota Hilux, Subaru Trailseeker and Subaru Uncharted have achieved five-star ANCAP safety ratings, while the BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe have been awarded four stars.

The Toyota Hilux BEV joins its diesel counterparts with a five-star rating after ANCAP conducted additional frontal offset and oblique pole crash tests to assess battery integrity and the safety of the vehicle’s high-voltage electrical systems.

The testing confirmed the battery-electric variants deliver comparable safety performance to diesel models. As a result, all Toyota Hilux variants, excluding the Rugged X, now carry a five-star rating.

ANCAP chief executive officer Carla Hoorweg says the result gives buyers another safe ute option as alternative powertrains become more common.

“In an increasing market of alternative-powered utes, business and private buyers now have another option that balances their safety needs with their powertrain considerations.”

Subaru’s new Trailseeker and Uncharted electric SUVs also achieved five-star ratings. The ratings are largely based on the related Toyota bZ4X, with additional crash tests and assessments undertaken to verify comparable safety performance.

“The addition of the Trailseeker and Uncharted to Subaru’s growing electric portfolio sees yet more safe choices for consumers,” Hoorweg says.

The BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe both received four-star ratings.

While both models performed strongly in crash avoidance testing, their overall ratings were reduced by mixed results in frontal crash tests. ANCAP identified an elevated risk of chest injury for the driver in the frontal offset test, and for both the driver and rear passenger in the full-width frontal test.

Dashboard structures also posed a potential upper-leg injury risk to front occupants in the frontal offset test.

The BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe each received an Adult Occupant Protection score of 78%, below the 80% threshold required for a five-star rating.
