EV Charging Specialist provides EV charging knowledge
EV Charging Specialist owner Debbie van der Schyff of Waimauku says she began a “fill-in” role about eight years ago when asked to step in for a colleague who deployed to a regional office, becoming the go to person for EV charging.
“Years later, what started as a “fill in” role quickly grew into a passion and a calling to leave this planet in a better state for future generations,” she says.
“From the very first project with Asthma New Zealand, I learned the difference between expectation and reality.
“While it’s not pleasant to challenge a customer’s vision, it’s absolutely necessary in this industry,” says van der Schyff.
“Due to the significant amount of misinformation in the electric vehicle market, it is crucial to work with the right company – one that prioritises your best interests over a sales target.”
Van der Schyff says she’d rather not sell a product than have a customer feel exploited.
“With all the necessary information at hand, if they choose to proceed, I always strive to find the most suitable, purpose-driven product for their individual needs.”
She says her EV journey has ignited her passion for sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.
“Ensuring that the products we offer are manufactured sustainably and can be recycled at the end of their lifecycle are the most critical criteria in sourcing equipment.”
The end of 2024 brought significant change and a daunting outlook for 2025,” says van der Schyff.
“I was devastated to sever ties with the company I had called home for the past 25 years. However, this experience pushed me to reflect on what I truly enjoyed about my role as product marketing manager – and supporting customers stood out as the clear winner.”
Moving from a corporate career to starting her own venture is daunting, says van der Schyff.
“However, I was fortunate to have had opportunities to learn and grow and I decided it was time to spread my wings,” she says.
“The encouragement I’ve received from family, colleagues, friends, and the wider industry has been humbling. This support bolsters my strength, even during moments of self-doubt.”
Van der Schyff says the next chapter of her journey has only just begun.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share my knowledge and help achieve the best outcomes for customers.”
With support from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) and the government, EV Charging Specialist can continue making New Zealand a better place to live and travel, says van der Schyff.
“If you’ve considered transitioning to electric vehicles but aren’t sure where to begin, please reach out for a discussion.”
Van der Schyff says the highlight of her journey has been helping customers understand and adopt this new technology.
“Knowing their assets are in expert hands allows them to continue with business as usual.”
