Wellington’s central city has reconnected with the country’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network, with ChargeNet confirming its Inglewood Place fast charger is now back online.

The dual-port charger – located just off Taranaki Street – had been offline since July 2022 while Wellington City Council carried out a wider infrastructure upgrade in the area. Now refreshed and reinstated, the site offers increased power and the ability to charge two EVs at once, replacing the original single-port model.

ChargeNet’s head of operations Kivash Sewnun says the site’s return is good news for EV drivers in the capital.

“Inglewood Place has always been a favourite with EV drivers in the capital, right in the heart of the city. It’s a location that’s hard to beat for convenience,” he says.

“We’re thrilled to see the charger reinstated, upgraded, and ready to go. It’s a great example of what can be achieved through collaboration and a shared vision for a more sustainable, connected urban future.”

The charging site’s reactivation reflects the strength of ChargeNet’s long-term partnership with Wellington City Council. The surrounding area has also undergone a revitalisation, including upgraded paving, improved lighting, and the installation of a new accessible public toilet.

Sewnun says the charger plays a key role in serving commuters, local businesses, and apartment dwellers who don’t have access to home charging.

“Urban infrastructure needs to evolve with the needs of its people. We’re proud to maintain a strong presence in Wellington’s CBD and to support the city’s wider goals for sustainable, accessible mobility,” he says. “This reactivation is one piece of our broader plan to deliver resilient, high-quality fast charging across Aotearoa’s key centres.”

ChargeNet operates 270 public charging sites across the country and has powered more than 2.5 million EV charging sessions since 2015.

The company says the Inglewood Place upgrade is part of a broader investment to expand and improve EV infrastructure in central business districts nationwide.
