Five best used EVs under $19,043: HPI

The top five best sub-10,000 pound (NZ$19,043) used electric vehicles in the United Kingdom have been named by vehicle valuation experts HPI*.

The new electric car market is booming in the UK, with May seeing an 18.7% increase in the number of new pure electric vehicles registered, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), motors.co.uk reports.

New Zealand sources some of its used EVs from the UK.

With EVs gradually entering the used market, HPI checks the best sub-10,000 pound options for buyers, with statistics based on the target retail value of 15 plate models.

Top choice is the Nissan Leaf, with a target retail value of £9795 (NZ$18,652) and a published all-electric range of nearly 200km.

The Renault Zoe is next, having a similar range. A battery-leased vehicle can be found for £7850 (NZ$14,948) – the 100% owned vehicles have minimal depreciation and are rare.

The Citroen C Zero, Mitsubishi I-MIEV and Peugeot ION, the three sibling cars only really differentiated by their badges, offer value for money and good potential as an economical second car choice, HPI says.

With the manufacturers stating they have around a 148km range, they are suitable for driving around town and for everyday errands.

The C Zero is the most expensive of the three at £7525 (NZ$14,329). The I-MIEV is £7295 (NZ$13,891) and the ION £7095 (NZ$13,512).

“Drivers are becoming increasingly comfortable with electric vehicles as the technology improves,” HPI motoring expert Chris Plumb says.

“Second hand models are becoming more affordable and can offer cost effective motoring. Our picks provide value for money and are likely to hold their value in the years to come.”

Drivers of electric vehicles also benefit from additional savings that include no road tax, no congestion charges and some councils offering free on-street parking.
