Ford’s local arm has issued a recall for selected Escape models regarding a mechanical issue that can cause engines to fail and potential increased fire risk.

The recall concerns 2019-’22 model year Escapes fitted with the 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid powertrain.

In the notice, Ford details how “fluid dynamics” caused by the under-engine shield and Active Grille Shutter system can cause vapours to travel unpredictably in the event of an engine block or “oil pan breach”.

This it says can result in an under-hood fire, if it intercepts an ignition source.

“Isolated engine manufacturing issues have resulted in 2.5L HEV/PHEV engine failures involving engine block or oil pan breach,” reads the notice.

“The fluid dynamics induced by the under-engine shield and Active Grille Shutter (AGS) system could increase the likelihood of engine oil and/or fuel vapor expelled during an engine block or oil pan breach accumulating near sources of ignition, primarily expected to be the exhaust system.

“Engine oil and/or fuel vapor that accumulates near an ignition source, may ignite resulting in an under-hood fire, and increasing the risk of injury.”

Ford requests that those with an affected vehicle contact their local dealer to arrange a service date.
