Fullers360 starts e-tourism Auckland trips January

Vessev VS-9 electric hydrofoiling vessel

The Vessev VS-9 electric hydro foiling vessel joins the Fullers360 ferry fleet with services due to start in Auckland on January 29 next year.

Passenger tickets are already on sale with Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) giving commercial approval.

The nine-meter vessel can operate at a 25-knot service speed and carry up to 10 passengers.

Propelled by type-approved battery packs, the VS-9 has a 50 nautical mile (92.6km) range due mainly to hydro foiling technology adapted from America’s Cup yachts.

“Fullers360 is the first major ferry operator in the world to incorporate a certified electric hydro foiling tourism vessel into its fleet,” says Vessev chief executive Eric Laakmann, who reckons every major global water body will have electric hydro foiling vessels in about 10 years.

Laakmann says the VS-9 can be berthed and charged in nearly any marina, making it an incredibly scalable electric commercial platform.

He says during sea trials the VS-9 exceeded performance expectations mastering waves of up to one metre.

“The hyper efficient propulsion system uses about 55kW while cruising at 25 knots – the equivalent of just over 70HP. This is unheard of for a nine-metre vessel with a full standing height cabin.”

Fullers360 chief executive Mike Horne says the VS-9 opens up an entirely new way of travelling, “one that is not only immensely enjoyable but is efficient and plays a key role in reducing emissions”.

Passengers can choose between an electric hydrofoil experience or a private charter, the 40-minute journey starting at Auckland’s Viaduct.

Advance bookings are now available for January 29, 2025, onward for a limited time at Fullers360’s website.
