GAC has launched its Aion UT compact electric vehicle (EV) in New Zealand, with the five-door hatch starting at $39,990 for the base model and $43,990 for the Lux variant.

The Aion UT measures 4270mm in length and sits on a 2750mm wheelbase, positioning it in the compact hatch segment with seating for five occupants. The front-wheel-drive model is powered by a 150kW motor producing 210Nm of torque, delivering 0-100km/h acceleration in 7.3 seconds.

Range and charging capabilities

The Aion UT features a 60kWh battery pack using GAC’s Magazine Battery 2.0 platform, shared with the larger Aion V model. GAC says this battery technology has accumulated more than one million units in service globally.

The vehicle offers a WLTP range of 430km, with GAC rating energy consumption at 16.4kWh/100km. Charging options include 11kW alternating current (AC) capability and a maximum direct current (DC) fast charging rate of 87kW, which GAC says will charge the battery from 30 to 80 per cent in 24 minutes.

The model also includes vehicle-to-load functionality, allowing owners to power external devices from the vehicle’s battery.

Equipment and features

The entry-level Aion UT comes equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, an 8.88-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) instrument cluster, and a 14.6-inch touchscreen. Standard features include light-emitting diode (LED) headlights, heated steering wheel, and heated front seats, with the driver’s seat also offering ventilation.

The cabin features a walk-through design, allowing driver and passenger access from either side of the vehicle. Seven exterior colours and two interior trim options are available.

The Lux variant adds a power tailgate, panoramic roof with electric sunshade, power-folding side mirrors, auto-dimming interior mirror, rear USB-A port, and wireless phone charger.

Safety and construction

GAC states the Aion UT body uses 71 per cent high-strength steel construction. Safety equipment includes a 2.1-metre side curtain airbag extending from the A-pillar to C-pillar, plus a Level 2 driver assistance suite with adaptive cruise control, lane support, and autonomous emergency braking across both variants.

The vehicle has not yet received an Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) safety rating.

The Aion UT rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear setup.

Dealer network and availability

GAC has established six dealers for the Aion UT launch, located in North Shore, East Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington, and Christchurch. The company plans to expand its dealer network further by the end of 2025.

As a limited-time launch promotion, new Aion UT buyers will receive a complimentary home wall charger with their purchase.
