Geely developing 1,000V architecture to beat its own 5.5-minute charge

Geely is developing a 1,000-volt architecture to beat its own 5.5-minute 10-80% charging, with 1,500kW chargers already built, as reported by CarNewsChina.

Geely is developing a 1,000-volt electrical architecture intended to push charging times below the 5.5-minute 10 to 80% mark its current cars have already achieved, according to reporting from CarNewsChina.

The Hangzhou-based group, whose brands include Geely, Zeekr, Lynk & Co and Volvo, says it already integrates 800V systems across its vehicles, covering batteries, motors, power controllers, chargers, wiring and body electrics, and is now working on the higher-voltage step alongside more powerful drive systems.

The Lynk & Co 10 sedan has charged from 10 to 80% in 5 minutes 32 seconds in testing, and from 10 to 97% in 8 minutes 42 seconds, drawing a peak of 1,100kW from one of the group’s own chargers. CarNewsChina notes the car’s 95kWh pack is rated at 772.8 volts, making it an 800V-class system despite Geely PR describing it as 900V.

The charging infrastructure is running ahead of the cars. Geely has built more than 2,100 Zeekr-branded single-gun chargers rated at 1,500kW since March, output no current production car can fully use. The 1,000V architecture is expected to close that gap, positioning the group against BYD’s Megawatt Flash Charging system in the escalating Chinese charging race.

The distance to here

New Zealand’s public charging picture puts the numbers in perspective. The fastest public charging session recorded in this country stands at 337kW, set by the XPeng X9 at ChargeNet’s Kaiwaka site this month, on hardware rated to 400kW. The Lynk & Co 10’s 1,100kW peak is more than three times that figure.

The 800V generation is already established here. Polestar, Leapmotor, Zeekr, BMW, Hyundai and Kia all sell 800V vehicles in New Zealand, and BYD is about to land an 800V version of the Atto 3. BYD and XPeng have also indicated plans to bring their own flash charging technology to this market.

Two of those 800V brands, Zeekr and Polestar, are themselves part of Geely Holding, so the group’s high-voltage hardware is already on New Zealand roads. The Geely marque itself is the exception: its models sold here through NordEast, the EX5, EX2 and Starray, use conventional lower-voltage systems, with nothing wearing the Geely badge announced for this market in 800V or 1,000V form.
