Geely has revealed the new Galaxy Cruiser 700, a large plug-in hybrid SUV that appears to take aim at established off-road models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 and Land Rover Defender.

The biggest talking point is the SUV’s claimed 830kW plug-in hybrid powertrain, which combines a petrol engine with three electric motors, including two mounted on the rear axle.

Despite weighing around 2.9 tonnes, Geely says the Galaxy Cruiser 700 delivers a power-to-weight ratio of 288kW per tonne.

The company has yet to release detailed technical specifications, but the model features a traditional body-on-frame off-road design with boxy styling, pronounced wheel arches, large bumpers and a side-hinged tailgate carrying a full-size spare wheel.

The design also draws inspiration from the Land Rover Defender, with rounded headlights and vertical taillights, while a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor suggests the SUV will be equipped with Geely’s G-Pilot H7 advanced driver assistance system.

Geely has not announced launch timing, pricing or the markets in which the Galaxy Cruiser 700 will be sold.
