Barra has previously said GM is working towards an EV range and in March the company announced plans to produce a new Chevrolet EV based on an advanced version of the Bolt EV architecture and likely to be an SUV.

Cadillac will be GM’s lead brand for EVs, starting with an electric SUV in 2022.

GM’s proposed electric ute should look similar to this.

GM had intended investing in EV start-up Rivian which plans an EV ute later this year or in early 2020, but that didn’t happen with Ford announcing its investment in Rivian instead and that it will build an electric F-150.

Tesla is also expecting to have more details about its electric ute available soon.

It all points to a surge in electric ute production within a few years.
