GWM confirms Tank 300 plug-in hybrid for NZ in early 2026

GWM has confirmed the Tank 300 Hi4-T plug-in hybrid will arrive in New Zealand in the first quarter of 2026, expanding the brand’s growing range of electrified off-road models.

The PHEV adds electric-only running to the Tank 300’s existing 4×4 capability, giving buyers a new option that blends low-emissions driving with full off-road hardware.

Previewed at GWM Tech Day in October, the Hi4-T version uses the same hybrid architecture already seen in the Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha. GWM says the model marks the next step in its plan to deliver electrified powertrains without compromising the rugged performance that has driven the brand’s success in New Zealand.

The Tank 300 Hi4-T pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with GWM’s 9-speed hybrid automatic transmission. The system is designed to provide strong low-down torque and improved on-road refinement while retaining a traditional mechanical four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case and locking differentials.

Drivers can switch between electric-only, hybrid or petrol modes, depending on terrain and operating needs. GWM says the hybrid system improves fuel efficiency in day-to-day driving while delivering precise torque control for off-road conditions including mud, rocks, climbs and sand.

Towing capacity is unchanged, with the Hi4-T rated to tow up to 3000kg braked. The model also includes Vehicle-to-Load capability, enabling owners to power tools, appliances or camping equipment directly from the vehicle’s battery.

Local details to be confirmed

The arrival of the Tank 300 Hi4-T means GWM will soon offer petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid options across its local range. Final specifications and New Zealand pricing will be released closer to launch, with expressions of interest now open through GWM New Zealand.

The Tank 300 Hi4-T is expected to reach New Zealand showrooms in early 2026.
