GWM Ora replaces Nissan Leaf as New Zealand’s cheapest EV

The GWM Ora has become New Zealand’s cheapest electric vehicle with Andrew Simms Group offering it at a retail price of $26,990 plus on-road costs.

The Nissan Leaf was previously the market’s most affordable EV at $29,990, but a Nissan spokesperson says its dealer network has now cleared the remaining stock.

Andrew Simms Group general manager Jeremy Spicer says it’s no secret that at the start of 2024, there was a significant amount of unsold EV stock in NZ due to reduced demand following the removal of the rebate and the introduction of RUCs.

“There have been some incredible offers, and most brands have now sold through their EV stock,” Spicer says.

“We’ve secured a final batch of GWM Ora EVs and reduced the price to $26,990 plus on-road costs. This is the cheapest new EV on the market, and I highly doubt this price point will be replicated.

“This likely represents “the bottom” of the pricing curve for new EVs—not only have we reached price parity with petrol vehicles, but you won’t find an ICE car with this spec for under $30k.

“These cars are an excellent choice for private buyers and fleet use, offering remarkable affordability and all the benefits of going electric,” he says.

Spicer says 2025 EV arrivals will likely come with a significant price increase.
