New Zealand’s ute market is set to gain another hybrid option, with the JAC T9 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) nearing a local launch.

The brand’s New Zealand website outlines plans for a local testing programme ahead of going on sale.

“The T9 is coming soon in a PHEV option… But before we commit to this we’ll be sure to put it through its paces and test it for Kiwis, by Kiwis,” the company says.

“Our Kiwi team will put it through its paces both on and off roads up and down the country with the help of tradies, farmers, ute pros and more.”

JAC says it does not yet have a confirmed arrival date for the T9 PHEV.

Local pricing and specifications are also yet to be confirmed, although the model is expected to align closely with the Australian version.

In Australia, where the model is marketed as the Hunter, the PHEV pairs a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors.

It features a 32kWh LFP battery, delivering an estimated electric-only range of around 100km under NEDC testing.

Combined system output is reported at about 385kW and 1000Nm.

Fuel economy has been reported at 1.6L/100km, compared with 2.0L/100km for the BYD Shark 6.

Australian media reports the Hunter PHEV will launch in the coming months, suggesting the New Zealand introduction may follow soon after.
