KGM New Zealand is introducing the Torres EVX SUV to the market on March 26, with an introductory price of $66,990.

The medium-size Torres SUV sits between the KGM Korando and the KGM Rexton and is the first model to reflect the brand’s new ‘Powered by Toughness’ design philosophy.

National sales manager Penny Thorne says the offer is limited to 40 vehicles, but stock is now available at the 12 dealerships across New Zealand.

Thorne says the EVX’s traction battery is sourced from BYD and has a ten-year, one-million-km warranty. The Torres EVX will succeed the all-electric Korando, of which two models are in dealer stock nationwide.

The Torres EVX is powered by a 73.4kWh battery, and the front wheels are driven by a single electric motor that produces 201bhp and 339Nm of torque. When range tested by the WLTP four-phase test rate, a single charge will give the Torres EVX a combined pure electric range of 462 kilometres in optimal driving conditions.

The Torres EVX also boosts a maximum braked towing capacity of 1500kg—the same as the Torres with a turbocharged petrol 1.5-litre combustion engine —with 500 kilograms for an unbraked trailer. The EVX also features V2L (vehicle-to-load) charging capabilities, so its battery pack can power appliances.

The launch of the KGM Torres SUV with both combustion and electric powerplants in New Zealand heralds a new direction for the brand formerly known as SsangYong.

Oliver HG Chang, the general manager of the KG Mobility Asia Pacific and South America team, says he would like to see the brand reach 2000 sales locally.

Byung-Hun Woo, the managing director of KG Mobility Asia Pacific and South America business and support division, says the brand exported 55,000 vehicles from Korea in 2023, aiming for 320,000 units by 2026.

Features and equipment

The Torres models offer competitive approaches and departure angles in towing situations for safer driving in more challenging or off-road conditions. If a trailer snaking while being towed occurs, the trailer sway control function takes over to help the driver regain control when this phenomenon affects the steering and directional stability.

The Torres exterior projects a rugged and tough aesthetic, while the interior offers a comfortable and contemporary space. Seamlessly integrated into the ergonomic design, Torres’ interior has been designed to maximise comfort and convenience for all onboard.

The slim dashboard creates a spacious feel, providing an uninterrupted road view. Aside from being stylish, the four-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel offers integrated audio controls for quick access. Metal accents and ambient mood lighting add a sophisticated touch to the leather upholstery.

Information is presented in a user-friendly, twin-panoramic 12.3” digital display cluster with infotainment controls. Standard features include Apple CarPlay, Google Android AutoTM,2 Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio, and front USB-C and AUX ports, accompanied by six cabin speakers.

With a width of 1,890mm, Torres offers space for passenger comfort and a load area that sets an industry standard, ranging from 703 to 1,662 litres. This presents an expansive luggage capacity suitable for a mid-size SUV, with generous luggage space and numerous functional storage spaces.

Adding to its versatility, Torres features a concealed space beneath the load floor, enhancing space efficiency and security. This practical storage area caters to various needs and is convenient for daily activities and road-trip adventures.

Driving impressions

Auto Media Group had a two-hour window of opportunity to experience the Torres EVX on a mixture of urban tarmac, state highways and some unsealed roads.

First impressions are good; the EVX is a friendly car to drive and offers the quiet yet powerful response expected of an electric vehicle. Motorway cruising is serene and well-behaved on a stretch of unsealed road, sitting comfortably and handling confidently in spite of the rough surfaces and occasional potholes.

The interior design and execution of the Torres is a step up from its older siblings, and we liked the copper accents that brought a premium feel to the interior. Save for having to plug in an IOS or Android device for navigation, the Torres doesn’t lack equipment, and the leather-clad seats are comfortable and supportive.

We look forward to spending more time with KGM’s new EV challenger in April.
