Mahindra has whipped the covers off the XUV 400 EV; the brand’s first fully electric vehicle. And it could be a starter for New Zealand’s burgeoning economy EV segment.

The XUV 400 is a compact crossover sold in market’s like Mahindra’s home market of India originally as an internal combustion model and now as a dedicated plug-in.

The model boasts a 39.4kWh battery pack with a commendable claimed range of 456km. This is paired to a single electric motor making 110kW and 310Nm; sending its power to the front wheels.

Although the 400 is designed to be an affordable plug-in, it does get some creature comforts like a sunroof, dual-zone climate control, and a suite of active safety tech.

Pricing and availability for the model in markets where it’s been announced are yet to be confirmed, although the company says pricing detail will be revealed in India next January.

While Mahindra’s presence in New Zealand has become more subdued of late, EVs & Beyond understands that the brand is preparing for a soft relaunch of sorts with a line-up of affordable plug-in products.

The XUV 400 EV is likely to be a piece in the puzzle. EVs & Beyond has reached out to a local Mahindra representative for comment.

The model’s reveal comes as New Zealand’s affordable EV class continues to grow. BYD recently joined the market with its Atto 3, the updated MG ZS EV has been spotted on New Zealand roads, and Great Wall Motors sub-brand Ora lands later in the year with its Good Cat hatchback.

Reports from India indicate a likely price in the ballpark of $35,000 for the XUV 400 EV when it lands. For reference, New Zealand’s current cheapest electric vehicle is the $48,990 MG ZS EV.
