McMurtry unveils production-spec Spéirling PURE electric fan car

British performance car maker McMurtry Automotive has unveiled the production version of its Spéirling PURE electric hypercar, almost a decade after development began.

The single-seat, track-only EV has been extensively revised from the prototype that gained global attention for breaking records at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and on the Top Gear test track.

McMurtry says around 95% of the production car’s components are new, including a larger battery, more powerful electric motors and a redesigned chassis.

Power comes from a twin-motor rear-wheel-drive powertrain producing 746kW (1000bhp), supplied by a new 100kWh lithium-ion battery replacing the prototype’s 60kWh pack.

The company claims the Spéirling PURE can accelerate from 0-97km/h in 1.55 seconds, reach a top speed of 305km/h and generate up to 3g under both cornering and braking. Despite the larger battery, kerb weight remains around 1350kg.

The vehicle’s defining feature remains McMurtry’s patented Downforce-on-Demand system.

Rather than relying solely on aerodynamic wings, twin high-speed fans generate up to 2000kg of downforce from a standstill by drawing air from beneath the vehicle, providing maximum grip regardless of speed.

McMurtry says the system continues generating downforce even during a spin, helping drivers regain control and reduce stopping distances.

The production model also features a redesigned carbon-fibre monocoque, offering more cabin space, improved visibility and easier entry and exit. A longer 2.2m wheelbase accommodates the larger battery, while the revised body incorporates headlights, a small luggage compartment beneath the rear wing, and integrated track-day safety equipment including indicators and brake lights.

Inside, each car receives a bespoke cockpit featuring a custom-moulded racing seat, adjustable pedals and steering wheel, a digital driver display, and personalised interior trim options.

McMurtry says the Spéirling PURE has also been designed for easier ownership than many track-only hypercars, with simplified servicing access and the ability to operate the vehicle at track days with the assistance of a single mechanic or friend.

The battery can be fast charged from 20% to 95% in between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on charger output, while an optional portable 100kWh battery pack allows recharging away from fixed charging infrastructure.

The first customer cars will be hand-built at McMurtry’s new factory in England’s Cotswolds later this year.

Priced from £995,000 (about NZ$2.2 million before taxes and shipping), the Spéirling PURE is eligible for a range of international time attack events, with owners also receiving access to a factory-supported owners’ club offering track events and driver coaching.

The production-specification Spéirling PURE will make its public debut at next week’s Goodwood Festival of Speed before appearing at The Quail during California’s Monterey Car Week in August.
