Meridian expands South Island network with new sites and upgrades
Meridian Energy has announced progress on several key charging projects across the South Island, with a new site now operational in Whataroa and further developments underway in Haast and Murchison.
Whataroa chargers live
The company confirmed its new charging site in Whataroa is up and running. Located at The Lonely Stag Café on Main Road, the site features two 50kW DC chargers, equipped with both CHAdeMO and CCS connectors. Drivers can top up while stopping for coffee or snacks, with Meridian encouraging early users to share feedback and photos of their experience.
Haast installation delayed but progressing
In Haast, Meridian acknowledged delays but said significant groundwork has been completed. The project required an upgrade to the local electricity network, including the installation of a brand-new transformer. Groundworks are finished, and a load management system is now being installed to ensure safe and reliable charging without overloading the local supply.
“Remote locations like Haast come with unique challenges and this one’s been more complex than most sites,” the company said, noting its commitment to getting chargers operational as soon as possible.
Murchison to gain high-power charging hub
Meanwhile, Murchison – long reliant on a single public charger – is set for a major upgrade. Meridian has signed an agreement with Beechwoods Café to host three 160kW DC chargers. Work is underway to boost the local network to handle the increased demand.
The company acknowledged frustrations with the limited charging options in the town and said the upgrade will significantly improve reliability and reduce wait times for travellers.
Ongoing expansion
Meridian has invited EV drivers to share suggestions on future sites as it continues rolling out its Zero charging network across the South Island.
