Meridian’s Waiinu Energy Park referred for fast-track consenting

Meridian Energy’s proposed Waiinu Energy Park near Whanganui has taken a step forward after being referred for consideration under the Government’s fast-track consenting process.
The project, which combines wind generation, solar energy and battery storage, is proposed for a site northwest of Whanganui and would be one of New Zealand’s largest renewable energy developments if approved.
Meridian says the project could generate enough renewable electricity to power up to 253,000 homes.
Chief executive Mike Roan says the referral reflects the work undertaken to prepare the application.
“Fast-track requires a lot of work to be done up front, so we’ve taken time to ensure the application is as detailed and well thought-out as possible, and that it picks up on feedback from iwi and hapū, and the local community,” Roan says.
The fast-track referral allows the project to proceed to the next stage of the consenting process, with Meridian planning to submit its substantive application later this year.
Roan says developments such as Waiinu will play an important role in strengthening New Zealand’s electricity system.

“We know that New Zealanders want a strong, resilient and affordable electricity system, and projects like Waiinu will help deliver those outcomes.”
Meridian says the project would also provide economic benefits for the Whanganui region through construction spending, local employment opportunities and permanent operational roles once completed.
Roan says large-scale renewable energy projects rely on significant investment capability.
“Innovative, ambitious and large-scale developments like Waiinu are possible because of Meridian’s strong balance sheet.”
“It’s through these sorts of investments that we’re delivering the new generation New Zealand needs to make power affordable. We are already seeing forward prices decline as new renewables replace the industry’s reliance on the country’s declining gas production, and that’s good news for consumers.”
Meridian is New Zealand’s largest electricity generator, producing electricity from hydro, wind and solar assets. The company has a number of renewable generation and battery storage projects under development.
