Mevo launches in Auckland

Car share service Mevo, which is adding electric Polestar 2s and Tesla Model 3s, has launched in Auckland.

This expansion follows continued growth for Mevo in 2021, with the successful acquisition of Loop in Hamilton, significant user growth in Wellington, and the launch of Virtual Fleet subscriptions across all three locations.

Mevo’s move into Auckland is welcomed by Auckland mayor Phil Goff who says car share services like Mevo are giving Aucklanders greater transport choice and will play an increasingly important role in helping reduce the city’s transport emissions.

“Auckland Transport on behalf of the Auckland Council has worked closely with car share providers like Mevo, Cityhop and Zilch, enabling them to operate in Auckland through AT’s car share and parking policies,” he says.

“The growth of car share services supports the huge investment we’re making in public transport to provide reliable, efficient and sustainable alternatives to private vehicle ownership.”

Research shows that each car share vehicle introduced in cities like Auckland can replace between three and 15 private vehicles.

Mevo says that with Auckland’s continued growth and urbanisation, the car-share service will continue its mission to help build more liveable cities by providing a better alternative to private car ownership.

With almost 15,000 members in New Zealand, the Mevo community is growing rapidly and empowers members in long-term systems change and a reduction in private car ownership.

Mevo co-founder and chief executive Erik Zydervelt says the expansion into Auckland is just the beginning of Mevo empowering  the country to fundamentally shift its relationship with private vehicles from ownership to access.

“More accessible shared transport is the future and is an area that all cities need to do more to embrace,” he explains.

“This Auckland launch signifies a huge milestone for us being our country’s largest city with some of the most complex infrastructure challenges, and signals the next phase of growth for Mevo.

“This gives us our first launch of a city with more than one million in population and is a perfect stepping-stone to launching in major international cities in the near future.”

Mevo operates its network fully climate-positive, which means all life cycle emissions measured, reduced, and offset by 120% providing a net carbon negative impact, with less carbon in the atmosphere after each trip.

With each Mevo vehicle removing 11 private vehicles from the road, Mevo aims to reduce the effects of congestion, the need for private cars, and parking spaces in new developments.

Inside the initial Flex Zone located across Central Auckland, Freeman’s Bay and Ponsonby, Mevo members will have access to a mixed fleet of Volkswagen Polo and Kia Stonic when they need them, accessing and unlocking them on their smartphones.

EV options for Aucklanders will be arriving soon, supported by the Government’s Low Emission Transport Fund (LETF).

Mevo members will also be able to take vehicles one-way between Auckland Airport and the city, with guaranteed parking and optional pre-booking.
