MG HS Super Hybrid: Strong range for PHEV
MG Motor has confirmed pricing and key details for its new plug-in hybrid version of the HS medium SUV in Australia, with a New Zealand launch expected to follow – though final local timing and pricing remain unconfirmed.
The new MG HS Super Hybrid features a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine combined with a 24.7kWh battery, offering up to 135km of electric-only range (NEDC) and an impressive combined driving range of up to 1000km when using both petrol and battery power. The hybrid system continues to operate in fuel-saving mode even with a depleted battery, helping maintain efficiency across all conditions.
MG HS Super Hybrid specs and EV range
Available in Australia in two variants – Excite and Essence – pricing starts at $52,990 and $55,990 driveaway, respectively. Given the typical price differential between Australian and New Zealand MG models, it’s reasonable to expect the HS Super Hybrid to land here somewhere in the $55,000 to $60,000 range, if and when it arrives.
Power output from the combined hybrid system is 220kW, with torque rated at 350Nm, giving the HS Super Hybrid a solid performance boost over the standard petrol model, while still delivering impressive fuel economy. MG Australia claims real-world efficiency of under 5.0L/100km even without recharging – thanks to the self-charging hybrid system.
Unlike the existing MG HS+EV, the Super Hybrid’s much larger battery means more electric-only driving, suited to urban commuters who want the flexibility of petrol power for long trips. From a full tank (55L) and charge, MG has reportedly driven from Sydney to Melbourne with over 100km of range remaining.
MG hybrid SUV likely for New Zealand
Australian CEO Peter Ciao, who says the concept came from his own experience, is confident the HS Super Hybrid hits the sweet spot for local drivers:
“It is designed for Australian motorists, with the conditions we drive in Australia in mind. Our team has already achieved driving from Sydney to Melbourne on one tank and one charge.”
The HS Super Hybrid comes standard with MG Pilot safety features, premium cabin upgrades, and a spacious layout. It is also backed by MG’s 10-year warranty programme.
While MG New Zealand has yet to officially confirm the model, the local arm has been actively expanding its electrified range with models like the MG4 EV, ZS EV, and existing HS+EV PHEV. With growing consumer interest in plug-in hybrids as a bridge to full electrification, the MG HS Super Hybrid seems a strong candidate for NZ showrooms, likely arriving in late 2025.
