MG teases electric hatch to rival the Volkswagen ID.3
Off the back of its successful ZS EV, MG’s next pure electric venture looks set to be either a hatchback or an even smaller crossover.
The Chinese firm has released teaser images of its next new release. The still to be named compact is set to hit the market later this year, with a full unveiling seemingly imminent.
Among the few details issued by the manufacturer is, oddly, the model’s length. It is 4300mm long, meaning it’s almost exactly the same length as the 4314mm ZS and 40mm longer than Volkswagen’s potentially rivalling ID.3.
It’s also 245mm longer than MG’s current smallest car, the MG 3.
According to a report from Autocar UK, the model will be called the MG 4. This unsurprisingly sees it sit above the aforementioned 3 in the food chain, and below the mid-size MG 5.
The same report indicates that the model will borrow powertrain elements from the MG 5 EV estate. This means it could use the same 61.1kWh battery pack capable of a range of around 400km. This has yet to be formally confirmed.
The teaser images and video show a model with a relatively low-slung body and a considerable amount of black cladding. It also features swooping wrap-around LED taillights, similar to those of the Kia EV6.
MG notes in its teaser material that the new model has been developed “with the UK consumer in mind”. What this means is unclear, although underlines the brand’s desire to be taken as a serious rival to Europe’s offerings in the region.
Another nugget worth acknowledging is MG’s use of the hashtag #MGElectricforAll in its teaser material for the new car. This MG could become one of the most affordable electric cars on the planet. We will get to see if this comes to fruition later in the year.
