MG4 EV Urban targets mainstream
MG Motor New Zealand is set to expand its electric vehicle line-up with the arrival of the MG4 EV Urban, a new entry-level model aimed at making EV ownership more accessible for Kiwi drivers.
Priced from $38,990 plus on-road costs, the front-wheel drive hatchback is positioned to compete with similarly priced petrol vehicles, as the brand looks to attract buyers seeking lower running costs amid ongoing fuel price volatility.
MG says the MG4 EV Urban is designed for everyday use, offering seating for five and 382 litres of luggage space, with a focus on practicality for commuting, shopping and weekend travel.
“With the wildly fluctuating fuel prices New Zealand is experiencing at the moment, MG is thrilled to be expanding our EV range with this latest addition that offers exceptional value and practicality for drivers,” MG Motor New Zealand country business manager Dean Sheed says.
“The MG4 EV Urban is designed for how Kiwis actually use their cars – whether that’s commuting during the week, loading up for a weekend away or simply enjoying the benefits of electric driving without the premium price tag.”
The model features a compact exterior paired with a 2750mm wheelbase, with MG highlighting interior packaging efficiency and rear passenger space as key strengths. The company says taller passengers can be comfortably accommodated, with the layout delivering more cabin room than its footprint suggests.
MG is positioning the vehicle as a practical alternative to internal combustion vehicles, with a simplified mix of battery, motor and suspension technology tailored to typical New Zealand driving needs.
The MG4 EV Urban also incorporates features such as one-pedal driving, aimed at improving ease of use and efficiency in urban conditions.
Design elements include 17-inch alloy wheels and a full-width rear LED light bar, while the interior focuses on a clean, modern layout with an emphasis on usability.
Safety is a key selling point, with the model carrying a five-star ANCAP rating and a suite of advanced driver assistance features.
MG says the vehicle is backed by its 10-year warranty, provided servicing is carried out within its dealer network.
Sheed says the MG4 EV Urban will be joined by further additions to the brand’s EV range, including an updated MG4 model.
“We are very excited to bolster our EV range with some fantastic new additions, including the soon-to-arrive MG4 EV Urban and its ‘big brother,’ the new and improved MG4,” he says.
The launch comes as demand for electric vehicles continues to grow in New Zealand, with manufacturers increasingly targeting more affordable segments to drive wider adoption.
