MG Motor New Zealand has announced the upcoming launch of the IM6 electric SUV, positioning it as a premium artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced vehicle with pricing starting from $66,900 plus on-road costs.

Expressions of interest can be made now at https://shop.mgmotor.co.nz/im6.

The IM6 represents the debut of IM – short for Intelligence in Motion – as a new premium electric vehicle sub-brand under MG Motor. The model marks MG’s first 800V vehicle in New Zealand, enabling significantly faster charging capabilities. Customers can register their interest online at shop.mgmotor.co.nz/im6.

“Our new IM6 embodies Intelligent Mobility which New Zealand consumers will truly enjoy. They will discover the remarkable features and capability of the vehicle,” says Dean Sheed, Country Business Manager for MG Motor New Zealand.

The model will be available in three trim levels with distinct powertrain configurations. The Premium starts at $66,900 and features a 400V IGBT platform with 217kW maximum power, 505km NEDC range, and 153kW maximum DC charging. The Platinum is priced at $77,900 and uses an 800V SiC platform delivering 300kW power, 670km NEDC range, and 396kW maximum DC charging capability. The Performance variant costs $89,900 and combines all-wheel drive with the 800V platform, producing 200kW front and 372kW rear power for 3.4-second 0–100km/h acceleration.

Impressive steering technology

The IM6’s standout feature is its bi-directional rear-wheel steering system, offering up to 12 degrees of rear-wheel articulation. This technology reduces the turning circle and allows the vehicle to manoeuvre like a compact hatchback despite its SUV dimensions.

At low speeds, the rear wheels turn opposite to the front wheels for enhanced manoeuvrability in tight spaces and parking situations. At higher speeds, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels to improve stability and cornering performance.

AI-enhanced driving experience

The SUV incorporates AI technology designed to enhance driving performance through features such as Rainy Night Mode and One Touch AI Chauffeur. These functions utilise 360-degree cameras to assist drivers or perform tasks autonomously.

“Areas such as advanced electrification, its digital chassis and its AI-enhanced cabin are all enabled through the latest generation chipsets from Nvidia or Qualcomm,” Sheed says.

An IM6 has been spotted testing extensively in New Zealand, suggesting the driver assistance technology will be well-tuned for local conditions when the vehicle launches.

The IM6 is compatible with MG’s iSMART mobile application, allowing owners to remotely monitor charging, check vehicle location, and plan routes. The app provides real-time vehicle location tracking on an integrated map system.

IM Presented by MG Motor operates as a joint venture between SAIC, ZJ Hi Tech and Alibaba, sitting under the broader SAIC umbrella. The brand aims to establish a new benchmark for AI technology in New Zealand’s vehicle market.
