More than 100 EVs at Auto Shanghai 2025
BYD, Geely, General Motors (Cadillac), Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen are among brands showcasing EV models at the 21st Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Auto Shanghai) at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre in Shanghai, China, from April 23 to May 2, 2025.
Omoda Jaecoo will reveal new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric models at the show, including the C7 Super Hybrid System (SHS), the C5 SHS, and J5 battery electric vehicle (BEV).
Chinese regulators have tightened marketing claims around automated driving terms such as “autonomous” after a crash involving a Chinese electric sports sedan in March in which three people were killed.
Automotive manufacturers were considering highlighting new automated driving assistance features at the Shanghai show, but Reuters says that’s been upended by the government following the fatal crash.
China regulators in February also stopped automotive manufacturers installing over-the-air (OTA) updates to driver-assistance software without government approval, says Reuters.
“That prompted Tesla to halt a limited-time free trial of its ‘Full Self Driving’ (FSD) software in China,” it says, adding Tesla later also dropping FSD from the name and called it “intelligent assisted driving”.
Geely’s Zeekr EV brand plans to launch its first model equipped with Level 3 driver-assistance technology at Auto Shanghai, meaning it can enable hands-off driving on highways and city streets but still requires drivers to watch the road, says Reuters, adding Zeekr says its press conferences will now focus on showcasing hybrid models and battery technology.
Chinese regulators are also tightening EV-battery standards, aiming to reduce fire and explosion risks, says Reuters.
China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) sector continues its sales surge with electrified vehicles accounting for more than half of all new-car sales in that country.
Auto Media Group, publisher of titles such as AutoTalk, TransportTalk and EVs and Beyond, will be at the Shanghai show with managing editor Richard Edwards (also NZ Autocar managing editor) and group chief reporter Robert Barry filing updates.
