New BEV sales down in January

New battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales took a predicted hit in January 2024 off the back of record sales in December.

Total new BEV sales were 295 units, according to Waka Kotahi NZTA figures, the worst since 2020.

The BYD Seal was the top model on just 31 units, and BMW was the top brand.

The new passenger car market likely felt the absence of the electric segment, dropping 12.3% to 8116 units from 9257.

It was a big month for rentals, with 1049 passenger units part of the mix.
