No power cuts but more solar storms coming
Power cuts – including those which might impact EV charging – are unlikely.
So says Transpower after issuing a grid emergency notice until May 13, 4pm,
No cuts were needed during the recent solar storm – described as an “extreme geomagnetic induced current event” – with Transpower temporarily removing some services aa a precaution.
Concerns included possible risks to navigation systems, power grids, satellites, and other services.
The weekend event provided more of a light show (aurora) for skywatchers, and forecasters expect more solar storms to come with the sun likely to remain active for about a year.
