NZ’s solar generation hits record highs

New Zealand solar generation increased 66% in 2025 to reach a record high as several large utility-scale solar farms came online, according to new Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) data.

The Energy in New Zealand 2026 report shows geothermal generation also reached a record high during the year, while renewable sources accounted for 88.5% of electricity generation.

Solar generation is expected to continue increasing over the next few years, with a number of grid-connected solar plants under construction or in planning.

The share of New Zealand’s total energy supply coming from renewable sources reached a record 47.7% in 2025, continuing an upward trend since 2020.

Overall energy supply declined during the year, primarily due to lower coal and natural gas production.

Renewable energy consumption also reached a record, accounting for 32% of total consumption. MBIE says this reflected both increased renewable supply and lower industrial energy demand, which is predominantly met from non-renewable sources.

Coal consumption fell to a record low in 2025, while natural gas consumption dropped to levels last recorded in 2008.

MBIE’s Energy in New Zealand report is published annually and provides data on the country’s energy production and consumption over the previous year.
