Porsche moves more to EVs

Porsche-Macan-EV

Porsche is accelerating its drive to electric, aiming to hand over its new electric Macan to customers later in 2024, launch an electric 718 by the end of this year, debut an electric Cayenne in 2026, and launch a seven-seat SUV K1.

The brand has ended production of the Boxster and Cayman internal combustion engine (ICE) models for Europe and expects the last ICE models of both for outside of Europe will finish assembly in mid-2025.

Porsche wants to rejuvenate the brand for the future as it accelerates its shift to EVs, says Electrek.

Meanwhile, Porsche says it delivered 155,945 vehicles globally (a 7% decrease) in the first half of the year, that sales remain stable with growth in Europe and a strong second quarter for North America (39,558 deliveries, down 6%).

It says demand for the electric Macan remains high and that the new 911 is popular too.

With the Cayenne, Panamera, Macan, Taycan and 911, the sports car manufacturer is updating five of its six model series.

“The associated transitions are complex and temporarily lead to gaps in the range in individual markets and model series,” it says.

“Nevertheless, Porsche has shown itself to be robust over the past six months.

In Europe (excluding Germany), Porsche delivered 38,611 vehicles in the first half of the year, a 6% increase compared to the same period last year.

In the home market of Germany, vehicles delivered rose by 22% to 20,811 units.

Porsche delivered 29,551 vehicles from January to June in China – down 33%.

“The main reasons for this still are the ongoing tense economic situation in the Chinese market and the focus on value-oriented sales.”

In the overseas and emerging markets, 27,414 vehicles were handed over to customers – similar to last year.

“The iconic 911 sports car continues to be very popular with customers: 28,212 911s were delivered worldwide (+8 percent),” says Porsche.

“The Panamera went to 13,255 customers (-25 percent). The decline can be explained by the current model change. This also applies to the Taycan. In the first half of the year, 8838 customers took delivery of the Taycan (-51 percent). The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman models achieved 11,886 deliveries, which corresponds to growth of 8%.”

Porsche says this year it will put out its most powerful product portfolio of all time on the road and it will continue to focus on a triad of drive systems – fully electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and some combustion engines.
