Porsche’s wireless charging goes on sale in Europe, with NZ Cayennes already prepared for it
Porsche has put wireless charging for the Cayenne Electric on sale in Europe at up to 11kW. Porsche NZ says every Cayenne Electric here is already prepared for it, but local timing is unconfirmed.
Porsche has put wireless charging for the Cayenne Electric on sale in Germany and other European markets, making it the first time the brand has offered inductive charging as a production option.
The system pairs a pad on the underside of the car with a ground pad in the owner’s parking space, which Porsche says is weatherproof and can be installed outdoors. It charges at up to 11kW, the same rate as a typical home wallbox, with an efficiency of about 90%. Motion sensors and foreign object detection stop the charge if a living creature comes close to the car or the pad, or if a metal object on the pad starts to heat up.

The rollout is staged. Porsche says the option is planned for every country where Porsche Connect is offered, excluding China, but has not given timing for New Zealand. Porsche New Zealand told us in April that every Cayenne Electric sold here is built with the necessary preparation as standard, so cars already on the road will be compatible once the system is available locally. At that point it had not been homologated for this market, and UK pricing put the ground pad at around £5,000 before installation.
Porsche is not the first carmaker to offer wireless charging from the factory. BMW introduced a 3.2kW inductive option for the 530e plug-in hybrid in Germany in 2018, and Genesis offered an 11kW system on the GV60 in South Korea from 2022, before reportedly ending development of the technology in 2023 amid reports of unreliable chargers and a range penalty of almost 20km on cars fitted with the receiver. Tesla’s Cybercab, due in Auckland on tour next year, has no charge port and relies on inductive charging.
The option arrives with a wider model-year update for the Cayenne Electric. Electrically operated doors now open and close with a brief pull on the handle, the front seats gain a massage function with what Porsche calls 4D audio, and the Paint to Sample programme adds 92 colours for a total of 105.
