Scania looks to ‘fossil-free future’

Scania boss Henrik Henriksson is backing fossil free commercial transport by 2050.

The Swedish commercial vehicle manufacturer has undertaken a study to look at ways to phase out carbon emissions over the next 30 years.

The review covered transport sectors including long haulage, distribution and city bus throughout Sweden, Germany, China and the US.

“Reaching zero CO2 emissions in our sector in the timeframe of the Paris Agreement is attainable but will call for change at an unprecedented high speed, and for serious and joint private and public sector commitment,” Henriksson says.

The findings point to several areas where improvements can be made such as smarter routing and load management, electrification, biofuels and hydrogen fuel cell technology.

“We can achieve more than 20 percent reduction of CO2 emissions by working even smarter in the current transport systems, for example through improved routing and better load management. On top of that, we see several fuel and powertrain pathways to a fossil-free future.

“Biofuels offer the fastest CO2 emissions reductions and electrification is the most cost-effective,” Henriksson says.

The research highlights the importance of moving quickly to adopt new technologies and supporting infrastructures.
