Smart globally launches new SUV in Australia
In a bold move that signals its expanding ambitions in the Australasian electric vehicle market, Smart has launched its first-ever premium mid-size SUV at a world premiere event in Byron Bay, Australia.
This new #5 model, designed in partnership between Geely and Mercedes-Benz, is the latest addition to smart’s all-electric portfolio, which already includes the Smart #1 and #3.
Dirk Adelmann, CEO of Smart Europe, expressed excitement about the launch, stating, “We are delighted to present our first-ever mid-size premium SUV, the all-new smart #5, to the world. With this new vehicle, we are expanding into a new market segment, reflecting our commitment to quality, innovation, and addressing the evolving needs of our customers.
“This vehicle represents not only a new level of premium for smart but also an opportunity to explore new possibilities in the realm of electric mobility.”
The vehicle features a panoramic halo roof, frameless doors, and the brand’s signature short overhangs. With a wheelbase of 2900 mm and an overall length of 4705 mm, the Smart #5 is built to offer both spaciousness and maneuverability. That makes it the same length as an Outlander but with a 200mm shorter wheelbase, fixing it firmly in the family SUV size range.
The battery is a 100kWh NCM unit, while rear and all-wheel drive options will be offered, rear-drive models offering up to 267kW of power, and the dual motor option up to 476kW.
The exterior of the Smart #5 also includes the Adventurers’ Collection, which adds practical features like underbody protection, a roof carrier, and side steps, making it well-suited for off-road conditions as well. This collection is available on the Summit Edition model, further enhancing the vehicle’s versatility.
Inside, the Smart #5 doesn’t skimp on luxury. The interior is fitted with zero-gravity seats, a Sennheiser Signature Sound System, and an infotainment suite featuring a 25.6-inch Augmented Reality Head-up Display. The SUV’s focus on comfort and technology is aimed at delivering a sophisticated driving experience that stands out in the crowded EV market.
“The #5 is a very special project for us,” said Kai Sieber, Head of Smart Design at Mercedes-Benz. “It represents a new era in smart’s commitment to premium design, going beyond boundaries and keeping an open mind.”
New Zealand will get the smart #5 at some point in the near future, with distribution handled by Armstrong Motor Group. The first dealership is set to open in Botany.
